says work has to be all &work, and no play. Now there is a new occasion, "International Fun at Work Day" that gives companies and employees a chance to "work" on having a playful attitude at work. The fourth celebration of this event is set for April 6, 2000 (the event is normally held on April 1, but this year that is a Saturday).

The idea for this event is that employees' performance, health, and productivity are positively influenced by the amount of humor, fun, and play that they experience on the job. Not to mention creativity, or what the effect on turnover, retention, and recruiting that having fun at work can bring.

Last year's celebration was a big success according to playfair.com, the outfit that created this occasion in 1996. Information posted on their web site describes some of the fun things companies did to celebrate the occasion. Sprint in Kansas City converted a parking lot into a beach, complete with sand, sunglasses, music, and plastic leis. Other ideas included dressing themes, funny hats, clowns, and contests such as naming floors of the building after employees. Bouquets, job breaks, on-site masseuse, and pizza parties round out some of the other suggestions.
