The Nosh Factor: Millennials value edible benefits, according to new survey

Companies that have been spending a lot of money on expensive perks to attract and retain Millennials could be getting it all wrong, according to a new survey conducted by ORC International and online grocery delivery service Peapod.com. The answer could be as simple as more free snacks at work.

According to the survey, 66 percent of participants who enjoy well-stocked office cupboards and fridges report being extremely or very happy with their current job. And healthy snacks, in particular, are valued: 83 percent of participants agree that “having healthy and fresh snack options (e.g., fruit, vegetables, yogurt, low-calorie snacks) provided in the workplace is a huge perk.”

bowl of applesThe way to Millennials’ hearts, in particular, could be through their 18- to 34-year-old stomachs: Looking back to when they last accepted a job position, Millennials were nearly three times as likely to value the availability of in-office treats compared to those age 45 and older. In addition, 66 percent of respondent Millennials agree with the following statement: “If I found or was offered a job at another company with better perks, including availability of snacks, I would take it.”

The survey also revealed that free employer-provided snacks do, indeed, get eaten. Among survey participants who are provided with free food or beverages in the workplace, nearly half of workers (48 percent) consume in-office snacks or beverages 1-4 times per week, while another three in ten (29 percent) do so once a day or more often. This makes sense, according to the survey results, since more than half (56 percent) of all full-time office workers agree with the following: “I hit an afternoon slump if I don't have any snacks to refuel my energy.”

The survey did not address whether Millennials also value the opportunity for nap time following their afternoon snack.
