Approximately one-third of employers report that their organization supplements wages and salaries with cash incentives in the form of individual or team awards, spot bonuses, and similar payments, according to a recent survey of Cash Compensation practices conducted by BLR.

This figure (about 33%) held true at the middle management, professional, exempt staff and nonexempt employee level. Unsurprisingly, at the executive level, the utilization of this type of bonus was lower (25% of responding employers).
Long term incentive bonuses were most frequently reported to be paid to employees at the executive level (28% of respondents) and all exempt level sales employees (26% of respondents.)
The current survey, which garnered 612 responses, was conducted by BLR's HR Daily Advisor in March, 2011. Data was gathered for five levels of employee responsibility in 10 departments.
