House votes to give federal workers back pay when furloughs end

Bipartisan legislation, HR 3223—The Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, was unanimously passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday, October 5, to give federal workers back pay for compensation lost due to furloughs.

The bill was supported by the White House and its Office of Management and Budget. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), who both have large numbers of federal workers in their districts.

The bipartisan legislation will provide compensation for federal employees who were furloughed on October 1, 2013, for the period of that the lack of appropriations continues. This language of the legislation is similar to other bills enacted during previous federal governmental shutdowns, according to media sources.
