Poll: Does Association Membership Pay Off?
Does being a member of a professional association benefit one's career? Results of a recent Compensation.BLR.com poll don't conclusively support that it does.

When asked "Are you a member of a professional association, and if so, has it helped your career?" only 16 percent responded that they were not a member of a professional association. However, of the 84 percent who said that they were association members, 49 percent responded "Yes, but it hasn't really benefited my career" while 38 responded "Yes, and it has benefited my career."

A recent report, "Where the Winners Meet: Why Happier, More Successful People Gravitate Toward Associations," released by the William E. Smith Institute, indicated that association members earned, on average, $10,000 more per year than non-members with the same education levels and job types.

The same report found, however, that it wasn't necessarily association membership that led to success for an individual, but success in one's profession which increased the likelihood of an individual joining an association.

The Compensation.BLR.com poll included 262 respondents.
