  • Know the compensation trends for the new year across the country, within your region and within your industry (as much as possible).
  • Decide upfront -- before you're scheduled to allot and award any increases this year -- how you'll divide the available compensation dollars among your workers.
  • Most of all, prepare your managers for dealing with tough pay conversations with their teams -- and manage any unrealistic expectations your rank-and-file employees may already have!
