Survey: IT Salaries Are Strong, But Recession Impacts Raises
A new salary survey finds that information technology (IT) "remains a strong career path" but finds that the recession has resulted in paltry raises for IT professionals.

According to the InformationWeek (www.informationweek.com) annual salary survey, conducted among over 12,400 IT professionals in the United States, IT pros are doing quite well when it comes to salaries: Staff-level IT pros earn a median $80,000 in total compensation and managers earn a median $105,000.

Among job titles, IT architects fared the best (as they have before) and is the only non-management job with median pay over $100,000. The survey also reported that "strong tech skills still can pull a good paycheck," noting that those responsible for "data mining, data integration, security, ERP, and Web infrastructure" generally receive median compensation over $90,000.

Moreover, two-thirds of IT pros surveyed were satisfied or very satisfied with their pay, while just 11% said they were dissatisfied.

However, the news is not all good: IT pros are feeling the recession's impact, as evidenced by median total raises of just 0.7% for staff and 1.6% for managers.

The survey found that how IT professionals fared in terms of raises varied significantly by location. It found, for example, that Detroit and Los Angeles were "hard hit areas...where the typical IT pro is receiving no raise." On the other end of the spectrum, it found that pros in Washington, D.C., received "solid" median raises.

"All in all, this is better news for IT professionals than we were expecting," Art Wittmann, Managing Director of InformationWeek Analytics, said in a press release announcing the survey. "But we also find that the once believed recession-resistant industries, such as healthcare aren't immune to the downturn."
