'Clean Air' Legislation and Commuting Expenses

In a BLR webinar entitled "Mileage/Commuting Expenses: How to Avoid Big Mistakes With These Employee Expenses," Mark E. Tabakman, Esq., partner in the nationwide law firm Fox Rothschild, LLP and Stacy Wade, Ph.D., CPA, assistant professor of accounting at Western Kentucky University, addressed 'clean air' legislation.

Don't forget about state and local rules governing commuting expenses, since many localities have enacted "clean air" legislation establishing trip reduction targets.

For example, California requires employers of at least 50 employers that are in an air basin that violates air quality standards for specific types of pollutants to offer parking subsidies or parking cash-out programs to those workers.

San Francisco requires employers with at least 20 workers to offer one of three different commuting benefits to employees working at least 10 hours a week!
