Governor Jindal signs Equal Pay for Women Act into law

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has signed SB 153 into law. The law, known as “The Equal Pay for Women Act,” guarantees that female workers at any state department, office, division, agency, commission, board, committee, or other organizational unit of the state “cannot be paid lesser wages to workers of the opposite sex in comparable jobs with comparable requirements, including skills, effort, education, and responsibility,” as well as time worked in the position.

The bill language indicates it does not prohibit different pay rates as a result of a seniority system, merit system, or system that bases earnings on quality or quantity of work.

The Act as originally introduced also applied to private employers; however it did not get the necessary votes for passage and was amended to apply only to workers at state entities

The Act will be enforced by the Louisiana Commission on Human Rights.
