Philadelphia has new paid sick leave ordinance

Pennsylvania employment lawEffective May 13, 2015, the Promoting Healthy Families and Workplaces Ordinance requires employers in the city of Philadelphia to provide paid sick leave to eligible employees.

Employers with 10 or more full-time, part-time, or temporary employees must provide up to 1 hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked by an employee in the city. Employers with fewer than 10 employees will be required to provide unpaid sick leave.

Leave is available for the employee’s or a family member’s qualifying illness or injury, as well as absences due to domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking.

Note: Employers will be required to update their employee handbooks and provide notification to employees of these new provisions by the ordinance's effective date.
