How Much Does Paid Leave Cost Employers?

Employers' costs for paid leave in the private sector averaged $1.85 per hour worked in June 2009, representing 6.8 percent of employers' total compensation costs, according a report by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In June 2009, employers' compensation costs in the private sector averaged $27.42 per hour worked, including an average of $19.39 per hour for wages and salaries and $8.02 per hour for benefits.

Meanwhile, supplemental pay averaged 83 cents, insurance benefits averaged $2.13; retirement and savings averaged 95 cents; and legally required benefits averaged $2.26 per hour worked.
