A worker in California has filed a lawsuit claiming his employer required him and other foreign workers to hand over their tax refund to the company, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

In the lawsuit, Gopi Vedachalam, who is a citizen of India, alleges that Tata Consultancy Services required him to sign over federal and state tax refund checks to the company, the newspaper reports. The lawsuit alleges the company had no requirement for U.S. citizens to hand over their tax refunds.
Tata Consultancy Services says it had yet to see the lawsuit when the newspaper contacted the company for comment.
Vedachalam claims he handed over about $25,000 in federal and state tax refunds to his employer from 2000 to 2005.
In addition, the lawsuit alleges the company violated a California law covering unused vacation time. The lawsuit claims the company had different rules for citizens and non-citizens of the United States .
The lawsuit seeks class-action status.
