Many HR professionals anticipate that layoffs at their organization are either "highly likely" to occur by the end of the year, or report that layoffs have already taken place in 2008, according to recent Compensation.BLR.com poll.
When asked "Do you anticipate that your organization will need to conduct layoffs this year?," 21 percent responded "It is highly likely" while 15 percent responded "We've already had layoffs this year. Another 16 percent responded that "It is somewhat likely" that they would need to conduct layoffs in 2008. Slightly less than half (49 percent) responded "It is not likely."
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act) imposes restrictions on the way layoffs are handled. It is designed to give employees advance notice of the layoff in order to find another job, seek retraining in a new occupation, and to give state dislocated-worker units adequate preparation to assist affected workers. The Compensation.BLR.com poll included 277 respondents.
