Get Your Report Now! or Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced this week that she plans to create a new Office of the 21st Century Workforce.
"The new office's first responsibility will be to hold a summit on the 21st Century Workforce this spring, where we will call on leaders from business, labor unions, government and elsewhere to address the structural changes that are affecting our workforce and our economy," Chao said this week.
"I also want to make clear that this focus on the 21st century workforce is not just about making sure that Silicon Valley has enough engineers. Our mission is to provide hope by equipping every worker to have as fulfilling and financially rewarding a career as they aspire to have," she said.
Chao spoke to a group of Department of Labor employees, members of Congress and other dignitaries as part of a welcoming event following her ceremonial swearing-in at the White House. She also addressed other challenges, such as the "incredible shrinking workforce," opening doors to the disabled and the aging population.
Chao added there would be a renewed emphasis on prevention of workplace accidents in addition to after-the-fact enforcement.
