The company's chief executive, Lee Scott, told shareholders and employees last
week that executives' bonuses would be cut up to 7.5 percent this year if the company
fails to meet its goals for promoting women and minorities. Next year, the cut
would increase to 15 percent, according to the news service.
"If 50 percent of the people applying for the job of store manager are
women, we will work to make sure that 50 percent of the people receiving those
jobs are women," says Scott.
The company has been the target of several lawsuits in which employees have
accused the company of discrimination and unfair labor practices. Earlier this
year, the company launched a public relations campaign to improve its image.
Last week, the company also said it is making changes to its pay scale and
job classifications for hourly workers. Without disclosing details about the
plan, Scott says the pay policy will be fairer, the news service reports.
