Sick Leave
National Summary
There is no federal law requiring employers to provide employees paid sick leave—a short-term salary-continuation program for employees absent because of a non-job-related illness or injury—but most employers do provide it as an important employee benefit. Additionally, a growing number of states are considering and adopting state sick leave laws.
When adopting a sick leave policy, employers must be sure that it fully complies with federal or state family and medical leave laws, the
Americans with Disabilities Act,
and any other applicable laws.

We switched to PTO, instead of vacation, sick & personal days. When we had sick days, we required a doctor's note after 2 days out. Can we still require a doctor's note after 2 days, since technically we don't have sick days?

Questions & Answers
My organization has a bona fide leave plan (Paid Time Off). I remember reading where it is legal to deduct time from a leave bank for a partial day off even for an exempt employee as long as their gross pay remains whole. Can you verify this for me?

Questions & Answers
We have an exempt employee who seems to be abusing the system because he will take sick days in half days. He also has used sick time before it accrued (he has negative 24 hours). What can we do in this case?
